cant full screen a video

when ever I try to full screen a video my screen turns gray, but I can still hear the audio being played. I wonder if this problem is due to compiz? well if anyone knows how to fix my problem it would be much appreciated.

Here's an idea - try turning off Compiz by booting with

knoppix no3d
