Try clicking ctrl-alt-F2 and then typing in Once that display is up, you'll see which processes are using the most resources. If you want to terminate a process in that program, make note of the number and then type k then enter the process number, and 9 for the signal number. Type q to get out. At the flashing prompt, type man top for more on how to use it. Also, note that ctrl-alt-F5 will be needed to switch back to the GUI.
I would recommend switching to Knoppix 6.2.1 - there are a lot of advantages to the newer version, including faster boot.
