on 7.2 I can get into the GUI but Gparted will not open. It's the only program I've found that wont open plus its the main reason I wanted a knoppix bootable thumb drive. Does it need to be run under su account? If so how do I do that from the GUI?

Within some earlier versions of Knoppix there have been an error with GParted; you've needed to use Knoppix menu => Run and type into the input window "gksu gparted".
This error isn't in 7.2.0. Menu => Preferences => GParted will start GParted as Superuser.
Please test your download with the Cheatcode "knoppix testcd":
