konqueror can't print chinese web page ?

    Hi,

I can see chinese web page in konqueror but can't print them, the preview(to PDF) shows nothing(completely blank, not even those english characters) in one version of KNOPPIX, show just square blocks in another for Chinese characters. I tried both simplified as well as traditional Chinese website and the result is the same.

I have no problem printing them in Mozilla(well they are ugly in the output).

I haven't installed any Chinese fonts and only use the default font set coming with xfree86 4.3 which surprisingly already support chinese character set.

However, xlsfonts shows that there is only gb2312(simplified chinese) charset fonts but not big5(taiwan). Still I can view all chinese website(both character set) without any problem.

Puzzled. Is that because printing actually don't involve X so fonts in X is not usable ? As a side note, printing under linux is another subject that is as clear as mud to me.

already googled around for this issue ?
it must be question of missing fonts or some other printprocessor that konq. uses.
this problem must not only exsist for chinese but also for all non-western lettertypes.
the fact mozilla can print it must be that the print output file of mozilla is surely in pure raw format . (without integrated text and lettertype)

    greetzzz,

remember there's always a rule that says that the most possible solution is in most cases the simpelest too

yes, already googled around and the conclusion I can draw so far :

    1. different application print in different way under unix/linux(for historical reason), unlike Windows(that I am so familiar with as a programmer) which use the same API for both display and printing.

    2. Mozilla can print because it do it the 'windows' way through xprint(some how) so it can use those fonts visible in X, and as you said the output is either raw or embedded with font info.

    3. konqueror use the *nix way which is to invoke ghostscript and filters. In this case, ghostscript doesn't see the font of X(of course as it doesn't know there is such a thing when it is designed). In order to have Chinese, I need to install all those fonts again for ghostscript and by itself is already an headache for those long winding alias names, the stack machine syntax.

So after all these, the situation is still as clear as mud and if I kick in truetype fonts, fontconfig, cups and my head is spinning around.

It would take quite some effort to have my language supported as it is in Windows where what I see is what I get and print

Been googling around with http://www.google/linux :
(with this url you search google only for linux stuff )

A few intersting leads came up :
    http://www.google.be/linux?q=cache:s...hl=nl&ie=UTF-8

    http://www.google.be/linux?q=cache:a...hl=nl&ie=UTF-8

    http://www.google.be/linux?q=cache:F...&hl=nl&ie=UTF-8

    http://www.tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/...ect_07_05.html

these shouldn't be considered as out of the box solution but more as leads in what direction to search . Hope this is helpfull to you.

    Greetzzz,
