Transcode/liblcms

I installed Knoppix to my hard drive (install was cake - great app so far) and I am trying to install Transcode.

I have installed Synaptic to make life easy for a Windows user, but I am having trouble getting this installed due to liblcms not playing well.

If I try to install liblcms it hoses KDE and tries to remove about 75 applications.

Is there a way to install Transcode? (keep in mind this is my first successful HD install of Linux in recorded history so I am very Windows centric).

Unless it is totally uninstable you can get it to work it probably wants to install a older version of liblcms and that is what is causing your problems. Try apt-cache policy liblcms although now that I look at my install liblcms has nothing to do with transcode.

As you can see there is no mention of the liblcms could you post the output of the simulated install command from your install so I can see what it is doing?

That's exactly it. Here's what you can do:

As you can see the version that would be installed on my machine would be 1.08-3 and it is coming from the testing branch if you use the apt-cache policy liblcms on your machine you will see that the version installed will be from the stable branch and you should have the 1.08-3 available. So try apt-get -s install liblcms/testing to simulate installing the version you would need from the testing branch because it has a version number higher than what is needed for transcode.

If the simulated install of the liblcms results in the same situation of not being able to be installed because a version is not high enough for some other library use apt-cache policy on that and try installing the version from the branch required then go back to install the liblcms until there are no errors and you will get to the point where transcode will install without errors.

The removal of the KDE programs is related to the transcode in that the install of the library imlib11 that will be installed is of a lower version than is required to keep KDE you should use the apt-cache policy on the imlib11 as well, you should have the library being installed coming from the unstable branch to keep the KDE as it comes from the unstable branch itself.

note: As you can see I have used the -s option with the apt-get install this simulates the install so you can see what will take place without anything actually being installed it is always a good idea to use -s then when you are satisfied with the result of the simulated install remove the -s and really do the install.
