Bad CD-RW disk, please help!

Thinking I could quickly erase all my files on the RW disk, I used Explorers formatting function for so doing. Unfortunately, since then I can gain no access to the RW disk and the formatting software (NERO Burning ROM) that originally formatted the RW disk seems unable to format it once again as a RW disk, or indeed as anything. Oh yes, the software goes through the motions as if formatting it, but the result is failure, i.e. Explorer is unable to gain access to the disk.

Once I got this error message upon trying to copy some files to the disk: "UDF Driver error: Please insert a new disc and repeat the operation. Details: [None given]"

I will be very happy to know how this RW disk can once again become a working RW disk.

No idea how to do it in Windows, but if you have Knoppix working and seperate CD and CDRW drives, I can guide you through how to do it in Linux.

Boot the Knoppix disc, and if you didn't use you cd/rw to boot Knoppix with then this should work:

cdrecord -scanbus

Find out which drive your cd/rw is then use it as the correct device name in the following:

cdrecord -v blank=all dev=0,0,0

If it still won't blank then try w/ the '-force' option:

cdrecord -v blank=all -force dev=0,0,0

CDRW disks tend to go "bad" after 8-10 uses in my experience. (And believe me, I take good care of them - they're always in cases.) I've since switched to CDR exclusively unless testing something that hasn't been tried before (like burning an mp3 cd.)

If the cdrw has been erased and reused several times, my advice is to give up on it and toss it once it goes bad. If you're using it for Knoppix, just burn the iso to CDR instead - they're cheap.

That sounds bad. I want to use CDRW instead of CDR as it is more environmental friendly.

Bad it is, but CD-R is certainly more reliable. Don't forget that you can always check an iso pretty well by mounting it:

I am not too experienced but keep many important
records on CDRW and have not had to discard many.

Yes I am not "too" secure -- so I usually burn and extra
copy of important buisness records. And I do
a test read to see if the file was really written.

I have left them in the auto at -10 f and + 120 f
but don't try this!

The dye, brand, and burner may make a difference.
