kde-base?

I've just messed up kde big time in an attempt to install some kind of GUI which'll let me burn audio CDs. Following on from this thread:

I try to do

apt-get install kdm kde-base kdelibs4

and get

E: Couldn't find package kde-base

I can't find it searching the packages at www.debian.org, either.

Help, please, I'm stuck with Gnome and I loathe it!

So I should be trying to install kdebase?

Oh poo!

I'm stuck. Essentially I know (or believe!) that if I can get a working Kde, I can sort everything else out. Is there any way I can use one of the Debian tools to:

- understand that my priority is a working Kde

- resolve the dependencies and purge any conflicts and broken packages?

On a philosophical note, I'm fairly convinced that the Debian package management system is superior to even the best front ends to RPM (SuSE's YaST, for example) but this is hurting my brain......


and the hell that is 3.1's install of Gnome (which I've never liked -- seems a waste of a really nice widget set) doesn't help......

I used "apt-get -t unstable install kde"

Same with kdm to get it back, you get the option to set is as default in place of xdm when it sets itself up.


Big thing is that it worked when I pulled it from unstable.

Put every file listed that it cannot install on the apt-get -t unstable install line seperated by a space and if you do not need koffice you may want to remove it as it will be just taking up space for nothing.

That's what I did. Problem is that I run up against dependencies where it wants a later version than the one that's going to be installed. (It suggests what I want is impossible.) I don't know how to resolve this: I'm not even sure how (or if) I point apt-get at a later version: forgive me, but this isn't obvious (to me at any rate).

I wonder: would I be better removing all references to Kde (in, say, synaptic) and starting afresh? What would I point the tools to to get a really up to date version of Kde?

I'll struggle on with this tonight, but I'm begining to think I'm flogging a dead horse. I might just pop out and buy another hard drive and pop a later version of Knoppix on (I'm still using 3.1) and copy everything I need over: there's not enough space on my SuSE partition. (I'll make a seperate /home, too!)

What would be cute would be an upgrade option within the CD, but I'm not sure if this is possible.

I doubt if it is really a impossible situation. With all the extra KDE packages you are beating your head against a wall trying to upgrade do you really use them all? If not remove them as long as it is not going to remove all of the KDE you want along with them.

The above shows you the minimum needed for a KDE install that is on my machine plus I have installed a few other KDE packages like Konqueror and Kmail etc. so this is all you need from KDE to run it.

Another thing you may want to try is to dselect update and then apt-get -s dselect-upgrade to simulate upgrading using deselect which allows newer packages to be installed while doing the upgrade.

Any idea what mount-aes is/does? Can't find it in the package descriptions. apropos, man pages.........

Mind you, I've not got a lot to loose.......

I'll let you know how/if it worked out tomorrow (I'm doing this by diallup). In the meantime, going to check bank account: may return with new hard drive!

Thanks all. In the end I bailled out: I was just getting deeper and deeper into the pooh pooh.

I'm now back with 3.2, a running Alsa, internet connections and struggling to find out why Lilo can't find init. (And how to get that sexy lady's voice on startup.)

I've made a seperate home...................



Apropos Knoppix and Debian, I think Knoppix may be the greatest thing ever to have happened to Debian (which is why I'm back here), but the next greatest thing would be a really good front end (and some clean-ups) for apt-get, dselect and family.
