ESS Audiodrive 1869 Onboard is completely ignored.

I am playing around with an old stock Compaq Presario 5151 desktop.After using the screen and xvrefresh cheatcodes, it booted just fine except there is no sound.Any ideas on how to get Knoppix 3.2 (7-26-2003) to detect and drive the ESS 1869 onboard chip?

TThere is a cheat code alsa=es1938 for that flavor of chip so you may want to try alsa=es1869 to see if it work work for yours and if that does not work then try the original one post back if it works and I will update the cheat code page.

I have tried the alsa cheat code with every Ess module (including es18xx) and nothing works at all.Is this just because the soundchip is onboard? If so, why does knoppix hate onboard sound chips?

It's more than likely the motherboard and the way the chipset was implemented it has nothing to do with knoppix or linux in general just stupid manufactures not following the specifications the way they should.

I guess that's why windows works just fine with it.It takes a jerk to recognize another one, right?Besides, it is an f'ing Compaq!

Add es1869 to /etc/modules file.

I have an GA-7DXR (Giga-Byte) MB with On-Board Sound.
Mine is an es1371 (SB PCI 12 Sound Chipset.

Then update-modules and then depmod -a.

After Rebooting, go to Control Center > Sound&Multimedia > Sound System and on
aRTS TAB select all.
On the Sound I/O TAB, select Auto Detect on both. (Do not check full duplex.)
Go back to aRTS TAB, and Click Apply then Test Sound.
