if you have any suggestion please send them to me. i am also trying to learn. So if there are pointers i will go and look at them. i am also trying to learn with LFS.
Thanks,

You may want to try the cheat code pci=biosirq to see if that helps Knoppix is using an IRQ higher than SUSE also you may want to look at the output of lsmod on both to see if the module for the NIC is loaded (IIRC it is via-rhine).

Do yourself a pleasure and buy a 3com card.
They come now for 40$ .
I think it's not worth the pain

Meh, I have the same problem. But I'm not going to go into my specs and stuff because the machine with the problem isn't the one that I want to use Knoppix on. Where I am (UK) you can get a cheap PCI network card for about 15 that is reliable - because network cards are so old you don't get much better.

I have the same Via Rhine onboard NIC and what got it working for me was disabling APIC (ACPI ?) in the BIOS setup AND booting with:
knoppix pci=bios no{apic}
As you indicated, it must be something to do with apic/knoppix giving the via adapter a high (remapped) IRQ, in my case it was IRQ 16. With apic disabled it was assigned IRQ 11 (not remapped) and works perfectly.
Thanks for the hint about the cheat codes!

If you want to persist on usage of VIA network onboard stuff ,try uisng the overclockix cd. This customized knoppix has the proper drivers onboard.

It does have a newer rhine-II module. But you still have to use codes mentioned above to get the right IRQ assignment.

Problems with VT6102 solved with acpi=off or no apm at boot.
