I had the same problem.. check if your KNOPPIX file on the cd is really ~680 mb and not 0 bytes.
If you are running debian unstable downgrade the package containing mkswap to testing, it has a bug and won't create your swap file correctly. This leads to ram shortage and the KNOPPIX file is not created.
