MEPIS Linux 2003.08 Released
Press Release
Morgantown, WV; August 31st 2003 - Today, MEPIS LLC *announced the
release of MEPIS Linux 2003.08 for Pentium processors. MEPIS Linux is a
desktop Linux that is designed for both personal and business purposes.


MEPIS Linux offers a live/installation/recovery CD, automatic hardware
configuration, NTFS partition resizing, ACPI power management, WiFi
support, anti-aliased truetype fonts, personal firewall, KDE 3.1.3,
OpenOffice 1.1, and much more.

New Features
With release 2003.08, MEPIS introduces the MEPIS Installation Center
which allows the user to install MEPIS or repair the boot loader,
Xconfig, or make a floppy, all while running from the Live-CD.

The new MEPIS Configuration Center allows the user to reconfigure
network setting, including WiFi, and also to configure the apt (Package
Manger) sources configuration.

MEPIS User Tweaks cleans trash from your user space and empties
caches.

With future releases, MEPIS plans to add more functions to these apps.

Improvements
The Kmenus are better sorted, the package manager resolves dependencies
when installing apps from CD #2, and now PS/2 wheelmice are
autodetected and configured.

SpamAssassin is preconfigured to filter email in Kmail and place up to
98% of spam messages in a spam folder.

Easy
The Live CD makes MEPIS Linux 2003 easy to try before you decide to
install MEPIS on your hard drive.

The autoconfiguration and straight-forward graphical installer make it
easy to install.

The preconfiguration and integration of over 1,200 packages make it
easy to use out-of-the-box.

A second CD contains 865 additional packages that do not fit on the
Live CD. Many of these packages are for internationalization and server
environment support. Over 13,000 other packages are available to be
downloaded and installed.

MEPIS Linux is available for download at
ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/mepis. The version
2003.08 has been submitted to ibiblio and should be posted soon. *MEPIS
is actively seeking additional mirrors.

As a convenience, MEPIS has arranged for a premium download from its
site for $9.95 USD. Alternately, the MEPIS two CD set is also available
for $9.95 USD plus shipping.

Regardless of how one obtains MEPIS Linux, users are enouraged to
support MEPIS by purchasing registration and 30 days of email support
for an additional $9.95 USD per seat.

Features
MEPIS Linux is derived from the Debian GNU/Linux code base.

Some of the advanced features for users include:
autoconfiguration of most hardware
a growing set of configuration utilities for tasks that need them
automatic network configuration in most situations
automatic WiFi hardware configuration in many cases
easy package installation via CD or the global Debian mirrors
ACPI support for laptops and legacy-free desktop machines
PM-like *partition manager with NTFS partition resizing
installer with upgrade support including from Mandrake or Redhat
ready to use desktop configuration with over 1,100 packages
preinstalled
builtin support for multimedia including DVDs, real and wvx streams,
etc.

Packages

Many of these packages are preinstalled and ready to use. *Some of
these packages must be installed from CD #2 or downloaded from the
net.

Version 2003.08 utilizes Linux kernel 2.4.20, XFree 4.3.0, pcmcia
3.2.2, Kudzu 1.1.3, and Samba 3.0.0.

General desktop packages include KDE Desktop 3.1.3, KOffice 1.2.92,
OpenOffice 1.1, XCDRoast 0.98a14, KPackage Manager 3.1.3, Dict
Reference Bookshelf 1.1, AbiWord 1.99.5, and WINE 0.0.20030813.

Internet packages include Konqueror 3.1.3, KMail 1.5.3, SpamAssassin
2.55, PAM Newsreader 0.14.1, KPPP Dialup Manager 2.1.2, Komba2 MS
Network Browser 0.7.3, Limewire 2.9.11, Mozilla 1.5a, and Mozilla
Firebird 0.6.1.

Security packages include Guarddog Firewall 2.1.4, NMap Firewall Tester
3.27, Snort Intrusion Monitor 2.0.0, and Security Enhanced Linux
2003081307.

Developer packages include KDevelop 2.1.5, QT 3.2.1, Java SDK 1.4.0,
Cervisia CVS 2.0, Umbrello UML Modeller 1.1.1, TOra Database Manager
1.3.9.2, Mono .net Tools 0.24, and Quanta 3.1.3.

Multimedia packages include Xine Media Player 0.9.22, Real Player 8.0,
XawTV Viewer 3.88, Kwave Sound Editor 0.6.6, NoteEdit Score Editor
2.1.1, Brahms Midi Sequencer 1.0.2, and Festival Speech Tools 1.4.2.

Graphics packages include the famous GIMP Image Processor 1.2.5,
Gwenview Image Gallery Viewer 0.17, KIconEdit 3.1.3, Kooka Scan & OCR
0.39, Acrobat Reader 5.0, and KPovModeler 1.0.

Educational packages include FlashKard 1.0, KEduca Testing System
1.1.1, KVocTrain Vocabulary Trainer 0.8.1, KTouch Typing Tutor 1.2,
KStars Planetarium 0.9.1, Kalzium Chemistry Info 0.5, KPercentage
Drills 1.2, and TuxPaint for Kids.

Games packages include Frozen Bubble 1.0.0, Lincity 1.11, FreeCiv
1.14.0, Quake2 0.2.1, Tuxracer 0.61, and TuxKart 0.2.0.

Server packages include Apache 1.3.27, PHP 4.3.2, Perl 5.8.0, Python
2.2, MySQL 4.0.14, Postgresql 7.3.3, DHCP 2.0, NNTP 1.5.12, Sendmail
8.12.9, SMTPd 2.0, Kerbeos5 1.2.7, vsftpd 1.2.0, and Webmin 1.090.
