Xine not working, filters maybe?

Hi,
This is my 3rd pc I've tried Knoppix on, this time around it acutually picks up my video card, but I'm having trouble with xine, whenever I open a movie file of any type, the player will start to open but not play then will go away, if I go directly to xine it will open but won't open anything. A friend of mine said he had the same trouble and had to change a filter somewhere but doesn't remember where. I'm really wanting to get the ASCII movie player working. I can't seem to find much in depth stuff for changing much in the ways of video, I don't much much about Knoppix and am not going to pretend too, windows is no prob, but things in Knoppix are kinda scattered. Any ideas?

Somebody in another thread said try launching xine from a terminal window and not the menu. Don't know if it will help at all but good luck!
