As root, I use kppp and have been able to dial-up and connect until last
apt-get upgrade.

External serial. Recognizies modem and starts to dial, hear dial tone, then it cuts off. Redials after specified length. Log window shows ATDT phone number, then cuts off and adds some control charaters to the end of the number.

Some config has taken over. Settings still the same in kppp.
Any idea where I should start my safari?
