hd install and lilo being dumb

ok i did a deiban kind of hd install and i set LILO to boot of the MBR. well after restarting it doesnt boot to linux or even show the option
now i read in a nother guide about setting up grub but ill do what ever it takes.

We'll need some system information;
is knoppix your only OS on the hd?
is the knoppix hd your first hd or second, etc.?

Boot to your knoppix-cd and mount your knoppix partition then cd (change directory) to /mnt/hdxY (your hard drive, where x is the device a,b,c,or d and Y is the partition number) and post your etc/lilo.conf file that's there

ok im goan boot back into knoppix in a min.

im on a laptop its got one 40 gig harddrive. partitiond to this.

30gig ntfs(XP)
4gig ext3(set root)
1gig swap
3gig exxes storage (ext3)

im goan post my lili conf in a sec.

See, it's all explained there: you need to change hda3 to just hda here in order to install to mbr.
SInce the lilo.conf file has an entry for windows at the end, you'll get to choose which OS to boot to.
Read the other comments in the file to adjust other settings (delay, default OS...), then rerun lilo itself.

ok yeah im a total linuxtard so bear with me. i understand that but HOW do i get write access?

ohh and i must say nice job on being able to see ntfs partitions. i rember a while agow when it didnt have that.

Ok, here's how to re-install lilo to your liking:

# boot from the cd
# goto console (Ctl-Alt-F1)
cd /tmp
mkdir K
mount /dev/hda3 K
cd K/etc
cp lilo.conf lilo.bkp
mcedit lilo.conf
# edit file according to comments
run lilo -v -r /tmp/K
# pay attention to possible error messages

ok hey did what you sayd got it working thank you. the only thing that didnt work was the run lilo -v -r.... friend told me to do it a nother way and it worked. thank youverry much im liking this a lot. also hwo do i change the resulition? it sux at low res.
