Boots on laptop, but not desktop

Not sure what's wrong here. CD boots fine on my crappy old laptop with 700MHz PIII, but not on my shiny new AMD Athlon desktop. I get as far as Tux the Penguin appearing in the top left hand corner with a flashing cursor, and then nothing happens.

Any bright ideas?

Try some of the "no" cheat codes like noacpi, noapic and maybe just failsafe by itself to boot with minimal hardware detection.
