n00bie Questions on Configuring Connexant

Hi All,

I am a total n00bie in Linux, so please forgive my ignorance. I have run Knoppix 3.3 a few times now and must admit that having to boot again in Windoze to send this message is a bit of an anticlimax!

My problem is that I can't fire up my modem(s). I have a Connexant pci winmodem (Rockwell) which I wouldn't expect Linux to fire up. However, I also have a US Robotics Sportster which I was hoping Knoppix would configure.

I have read a number of posts on how to configure connexant modems but they mostly refer to HSF not HCF modems and I am so ignorant of the Linux architecture that I would not know how to change those instructions to make them applicable to an HCF.

Could you please guide me to configure my modem - without internet access I can't enjoy Linux as I would like to!

I don't know about the robotics modem, but I also have a connexant PCI modem that I got working under linux (RedHat) about a year ago. At the time connexant had put a beta driver on the net with free down load. When I checked back a couple of months ago, they had strarted charging people for the driver, they did though have a free version with reduced speed (14.000Kb/s if my memory serves me well). Invested in broadband myself last fall -very glad not to deal with dial-up connections again.

For your Robotics modem, you could try google, thats how I got the drivers for the winmodem, don't know how that would work with live CD though.

I have found the driver(s) for the connexant and yes I've googled it to death. As you say there is the problem of trying to run it from a live CD - as I understand it a floppy or even a permanent partition could be used. Ideally, I would like to be able to run the installation from my "floppyconfig"

Unfortunately, trying to install the driver using the gui asks for a root password and I do not know how to get beyond that point, or how to overcome the multitude of errors I get when I try to install it from a console.

Hi All,

I managed to get a bit further down the line of sorting this Rockwell-chip modem of mine. I've downloaded the driver to a floppy (as a .deb file). When I run it from within Konqeror and select to install it, it asks for a root passwd. OK, I've figured out now how to setup a root password from the root shell (doh!).

I've also created a permanenet home directory on a FAT partition (in my windoze file system).

When I select to install the .deb driver it returns the following error:

dpkg: unable to access dpkg status area: Read-only file system
RESULT=2

I have of course changed my FAT partition to write access, but obviously the .deb installer doesn't want to use my permanent home directory for this purpose.

Could someone please give me a set of instructions for installing this driver into my perm home directory (assuming what I'm trying to achieve is doable).
