My lilo.conf looks like this

Code:
boot=/dev/hdb
vga=normal
prompt
timeout=500
append = "apm=power-off nomce"
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.0-1-686
	label=knoppix
	root=/dev/hdb3
	read-only
	initrd=initrd.img
	map=/boot/System.map-2.6.0-1-686
## A Windows installaton, example for partition 1 on first IDE harddisk
	other=/dev/hdb1
	label=windows
#	optional
	table=/dev/hdb
and when I run lilo:

Code:
root@Knoppix:/# lilo
Warning: '/proc/partitions' does not exist, disk scan bypassed
Warning: /dev/hdb is not on the first disk
Fatal: Empty map section
Running all this off the cd , chrooting to the hd.

/proc is empty ?

The urge to reinstall is strong, but I'm resisting
