I am unable to get sound working on my Knoppix 3.3 system, an old Compaq Presario with Windows 98 dual boot. Windows reports an ES1869 audio system. I did the following:

add ex1869 to /etc/modules
update-modules
depmod -a
reboot
Control Center > Sound & Multimedia > Sound System
aRTS select all
Sound I/O autodetect on both - do not select full duplex
return to aRTS tab
click apply

This causes an error: /dev/dsp not found.

How can I get sound to work?
