when i type
"app-get remove gimp"(or any other packet)
it gives me this mesage
W:Not using locking for read only lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock
E:Unable to write to /var/cache/apt
E:the package lists or status files could not be parsed or opened

i read this and figured that i dont have permishion to write to it(even though i am root) so i chmod all the extentions to be 777. when i did this it told me
chmod:changing perissions of `apt':read-only file system

i have been following the tutoreal on this site perfictly and it didnt tell me how th fix this. did i miss a step or dous anyone know how to fix this
