I NEED HELP It wont let me uninstall files

i am trying to uninstall files so i can install new ones this is what i typed
apt-get remove xchat

it gives me three erors
W:Not using locking for read only lick file /var/lib/dpkg/lock
E: Unable to write to /var/cache/apt
E: The pacage lists or shatus file could not be parsed or opened


any help or sugestions would be grately apreciated

Looks like you just need write access
type su and hit enter then try again.

I'm assuming you did
chroot /mnt/hda1/knx/source/KNOPPIX
and mount -t proc /proc proc

i tryed that and it didnt work (i am in the root shell)
and i do the other stuff too thanks for the advice though
i did everything exactly how they tell you to in the tutoreal on this site. i after the first day of trying to find the answer i redid everything. and it still gave me the same error. would it make a difference if i made the partishion in another os(suse) and it still has a mount point in that? or should i umount it in there
