Here's a couple of ideas,

A good resource for modems is http://www.linmodems.org/

more specifically:

http://start.at/modem where your modem is listed.

For snagging incoming faxes I use efax-gtk , available via apt-get.

Once running, click on standby and see if it recognizes your modem as a faxmodem.

For sending faxes, I've done it using cups and kfax, but the exact procedure escapes me at this late hour. I just don't need it that often.
