question on an oldfer system

I have a Compaq Presario 4180 with a blank hard drive. Will I still be able to run the knoppix system or will I need to have another operating system on the hard drive itself? 48mb ram 6gb space, amd chip

Should work fine, but slow... I can't say for certain but you may need more ram, but an installed OS is not required, infact to run the disk you don't even need a harddrive installed. The only issue I see would be ram, but if you went out and bought some more (if available for expansion) then you would definately be gravy. The lowest amount that I have messed with is 64MB, but it may work in less.

If you want to add more memory, and are able to, it shouldn't be too expenisve, and you would definately see improvement.
