Where does this boot loader reside? If it's in the mbr, then that's what vista etc seems to object to.

I got it to work by adding
sudo /etc/init.d/cron start
to the /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file before starting X. But this is a kluge. If anyone has a better method I'd like to know what it is.
