why dont you use ssh? the ssh servers already installed by default. it provides better security passwds are not sent in clear text form.
I have a need to use telnet to access a system that boots to a customized Knoppix CD. I need to remaster the CD so that telnetd will be available.
I have done the following:
-- added the following line to inetd.conf:
-- used the command:Code:telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.telnetd
-- made sure the following line is in /etc/services:Code:update-inetd --enable telnet
Code:telnet 23/tcp
The CD is set to get an IP address via DHCP. Is there anything I am missing to make this work?
Thanks.

We have a need to use telnet instead of SSH. This will be a training CD that brand-newbie students will use remotely.
Windows has a telnet client and we wanted to use it to avoid them having to download an SSH client and explain how to install and use it. This is a training CD that is for those transitioning from Windows knowledge to Linux knowledge and want to keep that "warm-fuzzy" comfort feeling for the students.
Plain text passwords aren't an issue for us for this course.
When we try to connect with either SSH 22 or telnet 23, we still get a connection refused statement. We opened up hosts.allow and hosts.deny for all users on all services and still get the connection refused error. Using ps, we don't see any iptables or ipchains running. This is Knoppix 3.6.
Thanks.
