how to install linux without using the boot installer?

Bleah. :P I must be remembering my "childhood," when I had to be dragged kicking and screaming from the command line to Windows 3.1.1, which ran on my machines on top of DOS 6.2.2. (I think I still have those floppies somewhere....)

I always took the version numbers to mean that DOS was still twice as useful as Windows.
