    Selecting packages when installing

    Hi again!

Can I select the packages I want to install in a HD-Knoppix-Installation (knoppix-installer)?

I want to install just my favourite programas and the necesary stuff, not de tons and tons of apps of Knoppix.

    Thanks!

No you can not. It will only install everything. Knoppix has been focused and designed to be a live cd/dvd and not a installable HD distro. If you want a selective install, then seek out a linux distro that is designed from the start to be a HD install distro. See Debian, Suse 10, Ubuntu.

And what about the next version (5)? They said it will be more oriented at package installing?

Good news! There is a special version of Knoppix intended just for hard disk installs! It lets you select just the packages that you want; you don't have to take everything that comes with the Knoppix DVD. And you can select from a far wider range of software! And it is much more stable than the version of Knoppix on Live disc after you do install. This special version is called Debian.

Verifying of md5 checksum and burning a CD at slow speed are important.

There is also Kanotix, which is basically a version of Debian meant for knoppix users especially since it was created using knoppix. It comes with pretty much all of the preinstalled packages that Knoppix has you can choose to use it as a livecd or install it to the hd just like knoppix minus the reliability issues. Knoppix is still better as a live cd so I wouldn't get rid of your disk after you do an hd install of an hd distro.
