OK
I got rid of the offrending packages and after much apt-get -s testing (and using Stephens apt sources) I went ahead and (cringe) apt-get upgradeed.
So far so good, a couple of issues and questions.
The machine now boots to a debian gui login, not command line, I guess it starts xdm from init.rc.?
KDE is not installed, in fact most of the programs have r c flags when dpkg -l is run.
If I want kde should I apt-get all of it or just the parts I want. Just trying to avoid unseen pitfalls.
Thanks.

/etc/rc[2-5].d/S99xdm if you have not changed it which one gets used depends on the /etc/inittab settings for the default runlevel.

Getting the parts works fine for me never have used the KDE meta package to get everything and from the looks of it the package has not been made for the 3.2.1 branch if that is what you want to use so it is individual packages there.

Hmm thought I would start out with something simple
Code:
root@toybox:~# apt-get -st unstable install konsole
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
kdelibs-bin kdelibs-data kdelibs4
Suggested packages:
khelpcenter
Recommended packages:
xfonts-konsole
The following NEW packages will be installed:

Conf kdelibs-bin (4:3.2.1-1 Debian:unstable)
Conf kdelibs4 (4:3.2.1-1 Debian:unstable)
Conf konsole (4:3.2.1-1 Debian:unstable)
Should install ok, right?

Thought I might try gnome but:
Code:
root@toybox:~# apt-get -st unstable install gnome
Reading Package Lists... Done

You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
gnome: Depends: gnome-desktop-environment (= 48) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gnome-office (= 48) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: evolution but it is not going to be installed or
balsa but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gnome-themes-extras but it is not going to be installed
Depends: netspeed but it is not going to be installed
Depends: rhythmbox but it is not going to be installed
Depends: synaptic or
gnome-apt but it is not going to be installed
Depends: xscreensaver but it is not going to be installed
kdelibs4: Depends: kdelibs-data (>= 4:3.2.1) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
I've since dpkg -r the kde stuff . What am I missing here?

you should use netselect-apt. This app. gets the nearest/fastest debian mirror for downloading with apt-get. It also generates the source.list with this choice.

You need to dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/kdelibs-data_4%3a3.2.1-1_all.deb to force the overwrite of the offending package and then dpkg --configure -a to make sure that nothing got left unconfigured and you should definitely install the xfonts-konsole from unstable for the recommended packages and should also probably install khelpcenter in the suggested packages as well if you want the help files. For the gnome you should do something like this apt-get -s -t unstable install gnome gnome-desktop-environment if it complains about more packages then keep adding them on the line it should install eventually and on my system.

Here you see that gnome in unstable is broken and not able to be installed because there is no version libatk1.0-0 >= 1.6.0-2 available among others to install you would have to wait a couple of days and see if the packages have moved through the system to install properly.

The force overwrite did the tirick. Could the force overwrite option be used with the package_name to accomplish the same thing ? If I RTFM it seems you could, but in addition to the files that cause problems one could get rid of configuration files that are better off left alone (imagine CUPS). I guess the lessons learned is 1} Use thes-s option when apt-getting to check for dependency problems and 2} that doesn't always catch everything.
Anyway thanks again.

I believe you need the entire package name including the version number and path to the file.

Definitely not to be used any more than necessary that is for sure.

1} Yes always use the -s first and actually take a minute to look at the output to see what it will do. 2} No having to force overwrite is a packaging bug not a dependency problem.

Well, sorry to keep beating on the thread but
When I apt-get -s -t unstable install gnome-desktop-environment the output lists a bunch of packages to be installed, with no apparent problems, however
When I run Synaptic and choose the package a number of conflicts ( is/won't be installed) are listed when I click the dependencies tab.
dselect also guides me to dependency issues for that package.
Same for kde. I'm inclined to just let apt-get do its thing but don't want to end up with more problems.
Given the number of views this thread has been given, I'm going to keep it alive in hopes it helps others too. Thanks again!!

For me, Synaptic is great to see what's available to install, but it's lacking when you actually try to install many packages. It will warn you about dependency problems that apt-get is able to easily overcome. If apt-get -s install doesn't indicate that it's going to remove anything important and shows everything being installed and configured I'd say you're safe with installing gnome, even if Synaptic gives you those dependency warnings.

Good it should install then but you should make sure the extra packages are coming from unstable as well I think I never use Gnome so can not say for sure exactly what you need but if you are going for the latest version then you want the unstable ones.

Used it a few times it only seems to want to work like I want it with just one branch in the sources.list (eg. testing or unstable) if you give it too many choices like in knoppix it does not work as expected.
dselect also guides me to dependency issues for that package.
Tried to use it once and hated it.

That seems to be the only one of the options that will allow you to do it so you may as well go for it. I would say if you are going to use dselect or synaptic confine the sources.list to either testing or most likely unstable and see what the result would be checking for conflicts.
