Always interesting to see how Knoppix is used!
Hello kiddies,
There is an amateur cluster that I built and have been using very successfully with clusterknoppix for a while now. I am moving to San Fransisco then on to equador and don't really see myself lugging it around. I wanted to post this as a sort of "goodbye and thanks to clusterknoppix" as well as hoping some of you may take an interest. I've put it up on ebay here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=8722800991. I'd love to hear any thoughts you guys may have.. i've always been pretty proud of it. If any of you actually do take an interest.. please ask me your questions before bidding because I want to make sure no-one does so without knowing all the details of what it is and what is isn't! Thanks peoples.. laterz -b

whats a computer cluster?? (i feel like a dork)
Don't feel like a dork, you gotta learn it somewhere right? Basically, a cluster is a set of various hardware working in parallel to increase the total computing power or "load-balancing" ability. Computing power refers to the ability of your cluster to perform CPU math operations.. such as.. if you were working in a labratory and had a large amount of data that needed to be "crunched". The specs of the computer you use to crunch this data doesn't need to be like a gamers system. Motherboard bus speed, video card, and amount of RAM are irrelevent because 99% of what the computer will be doing is pure mathematical computations.. which is a job for the CPU. So, a computational cluster is basically a bunch of computers donating their CPU's to one master computer. A load balancing cluster is just a bunch of computers who take the load off a master. Such as.. if there is a program which splits itself into 10 different processes in order to complete its work.. then each of the nodes in this cluster will volunteer to take one of the processes.. thereby releiving the master computer of the load it was carrying. This is a simple description, but there is a load of information out there regarding the subject. Good luck -bOriginally Posted by chris-harry
