Thinkpad Sound- OK on CD, none on HDD Install

After trying and failing to get the sound working on a TP570E (CrystalSound) using Debian, I tried Knoppix CD and it worked first time.
After doing an install to the HDD, Knoppix can't see any Soundcard info at all.
Any ideas?

The problem with the installed version, it is not really Knoppix once it is installed to the hard drive.

Knoppix is Debian with added software. The hard drive install removes the extra software.

I've put repackaging the hwsetup and hwsetup-data for a normal debian on my to-do list but have not got to it yet. Maybe someone esle can be of more help.
