I am brand new to knoppix and linux. I thought knoppix would be a good introduction.
Here is my problem. I have a Dell Inspiron 5100. It does not have an internal floppy drive, I have a usb floppy drive hooked up to it. I also have a usb thumb drive attached.
I am trying to get knoppix to be able to use the modem so I can get online with it.
I downloaded the scanmodem file, booted up in knoppix and after a while even figured out how to run the commands needed off of the command line, or what would be the command line in windows.
The scanmodem worked and returned the info I needed. The problem was I don't know what to do with it and so I was going to post it on the scanmodem forum for help, but I can't save it anywhere. Everytime I tried to save it to the usb drive, it says it is write protected. The floppy isn't being recognized, nor is the printer. I can't save it to the hard drive as it is NTFS.
How do I save/use the information from the scanmodem?
Thanks

Write protection is on all drives by default, although you didn't post your version number and some recent versions of Knoppix may have other USB issues. You can change the read-only access to read/wite by the following. But do not do this is your drive is formatted with NTFS partitions or you don't know the partition type, or you will very likely destroy all data on the partition. To change the read only access to read/write for a FAT partition, right click on the desktop icon for that partition and use the actions .... sub menu. Alternately you can remount it with the mount shell command.
My answer to this part of you question in no way makes me obligated to help getting a winmodem working under Knoppix.

I tried to include all the pertinent info, but left out the knoppix version. I am using the 4.0 dvd version.
I had the usb drive mounted, but evidently that is not the same as being allowed to write to it. I am looking forward to learning to navigate around using knoppix and linux, but at this point my ability is embarassingly pedestrian. Oh well, gotta start somewhere.
Thanks Again

If you right click on the icon for the floppy, you should see a menu item labelled "actions". Selecting this you should see (something like -- it's a long time since I ran Knooppix off a live CD) enable read/write. That'll do it.

This is probably not going to be much help but anyway...
You will probably need ltmodem to get support for your winmodem. I don't know if it is included with Knoppix 4.0, the last Knoppix version I used was 3.4 then I switched to kanotix which DID have ltmodem already built in. I'm guessing ltmodem is not included since you had to download scanmodem.
Somebody please confirm whether or not 4.0 has ltmodem.
If it is not included, you would have to install it. There appears to be .debian packages for ltmodem available, (see http://www.physcip.uni-stuttgart.de/heby/ltmodem/) but you will only be able to install them if you are installed to harddrive. You can install apps using klik if you have a 'persistent home' but ltmodem does not appear to be available from klik.
My best advice would be to try kanotix instead of knoppix as it does already have ltmodem included.

Thank you Crashed Again for your reply.
I actually don't have the knowledge necessary to get the modem running at this point but I am learning. I actually just signed up for dsl, and am actually online right now via konqueror running through my knoppix cd. Yeah Baby!!!!
