Cannot mount windows partitions

Just run Knoppix for the first time, and I'm new to Linux. I cannot mount my windows drives. I get an error when mounting. Here's the details:

more /etc/fstab

Code:

proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 pts /dev/pts devpts mode=0622 0 0 /dev/fd0 /mnt/auto/floppy auto user,noauto,exec,umask=000 0 0 /dev/cdrom /mnt/auto/cdrom auto user,noauto,exec,ro 0 0 # Added by KNOPPIX /dev/hdc /mnt/hdc auto noauto,users,exec 0 0

sudo fdisk -l

Code:

Disk /dev/hdc: 41.1 GB, 41174138880 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 5005 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hdc1 * 1 1912 15358108+ 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/hdc2 1913 10006 65015055 f W95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/hdc5 1913 3187 10241406 c W95 FAT32 (LBA) /dev/hdc6 3188 3824 5116671 b W95 FAT32

sudo mount -t ntfs /dev/hdc1 /mnt/hdc1

Code:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc1, or too many mounted file systems (could this be the IDE device where you in fact use ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?)

Thanks!

ls -la /mnt/hdc*

Code:

/mnt/hdc: total 2 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Feb 24 21:01 . drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 1024 Feb 24 21:09 .. /mnt/hdc1: total 2 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Feb 24 21:07 . drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 1024 Feb 24 21:09 .. /mnt/hdc5: total 2 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Feb 24 21:09 . drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 1024 Feb 24 21:09 ..

OK I am back. Just downloaded Knoppix 3.4 and have same problems mounting as before. Now have a new PC except for the hard drive.

Just tried Knoppix 3.4 with the 2.6 kernel, and the all my hard disk partitions appear on the desktop, and can be read without issue.

Any reason why 2.6 kernel would work, and 2.4 not?

This lines are humbug:
# Added by KNOPPIX
/dev/hda /mnt/hda auto noauto,users,exec 0 0
instead:

Code:

# Added by user :) /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1 ntfs noauto,users,exec 0 0 /dev/hda5 /mnt/hda5 vfat noauto,users,exec 0 0 /dev/hda6 /mnt/hda6 vfat noauto,users,exec 0 0

Perhaps your 2.4 kernel was build without ntfs-support, and the other problems depended on the wrong entries in /etc/fstab?
