OK, there's your new thread. Readers are cautioned that "will be available" does not make any statement about just when it will be available, and the implication of "mostly unchanged" is that some changes will be made.
Meanwhile, an unofficial 5.3.0 torrent is available.

AFAIK the 5.2 release, like this one, was a c't magazine and CeBIT special. It's been a while since we had a public release - 5.1.1 came out in January, 2007.
Anyway, here are some screenshots of Knoppix 5.3. (Click the thumnails for a larger view, and watch out for the ad server cookies ImageShack likes to set.)

Looks interesting, thanks. I'm not clear what the Kunbuntu reference in the 6th pic was, another computer on your network maybe? And what hardware were you running to get compiz-fusion working? Do you know if there is support for both Nvidia and ATI for compiz-fusion on the disc? (asked by someone who never could get Beryl to work in 5.1.x). Nice to see Virtualbox included, although I expect the nature of Knoppix kept out the proprietary parts that are still free for personal use; I'm surprised that Klaus didn't go for a purely open source virtualization tool. Now for the long wait until and if we get an official public release, you're correct there never was an official Internet release of 5.2.x, although we we led to expect one.
There's a Kubuntu logo visible in the bottom right-hand corner of the KDE 4 "kickoff" menu. So Klaus must have used Kubuntu's KDE 4 packages.
In order to get compiz-fusion running, I downloaded and installed the latest nvidia driver (v169.12) while running from the live DVD, and let the nvidia installer configure xorg.conf. (I tried installing an earlier version of the driver - v100.14.11 - and installation failed.) Then I used the command
compiz-manager & kde-window-decorator --replace &
from a Konsole window to start compiz-fusion. (For some reason, I couldn't find a way to use Emerald.)
Knoppix has a "switch desktop" command on the Knoppix menu (it's a link to /usr/sbin/restartx), and one of the choices is compiz-fusion. It started KDE with compiz-fusion running, but without a window decorator.
(I don't have any experience with ATI cards, except for the crappy Radeon XPress 200M chipset in my laptop, which requires XGL to run beryl or compiz.)

Thanks macs, but I prefer to wait for whatever Klaus decides id to be released to the Internet. Even, if like las year, it never gets released.
I downloaded knoppix 5.3 Geran version not realizing that it actually was all German version. Is there anyway I can make it into a permanent Enlish/USA one? Not just the keyboard either, I mean everything including the OS, programs and the whole distro load.
At the boot prompt, type in - knoppix lang=us
Shift 0 gets the = sign

Hello pnti, no I don't. I would expect it to be "open source" (even though the sources have been getting harder to come by with Knoppix versions). I don't know if it's GPL2, GPL3 or what. I expect that it's a mixture, maybe even some software with restrictions on it. I'm not clear on why you are asking this. My preference is simply to wait until Klaus sees fit to release his work to the Internet. I'm not saying that others who post it are breaking any law, don't know if they are or not, but I don't think it respects the author to release his work to the Internet before he chooses to. It may ever reduce the urgency in his mind to get an official Internet version released.
I downloaded both DVD ISOs, and while the one from thepiratebay.org was little bit larger than the one from linuxtracker.org, the list of installed packages from each is identical.
(And apart from some proprietary drivers for something called an AVM Fritz!Card, on cursory inspection, I don't see any proprietary software.)
I also tried running the Knoppix installer to install Knoppix in "Debian" mode (twice) and ended up with a GRUB error 2 ("Bad file or directory type") when trying to access the kernel (or any file on the partition, for that matter) both times. So I gave up and reinstalled the distro I previously had on that partition, with no problems -- i.e. there's no problem with the partition itself. Bit of a mystery there.
Hello
Well, Knoppix in HD-Installation "debian=mode" is not a good idea. In the current c't Magazin the Installation is not decribed, only said Knoppix is a live-DVD and Installation not recommended..
But I changed my poorman install from version 5.2 to 5.3 and it works fine and, startet with grub in the mbr, it is fast enough for tests and work.
Visitors of the CEBit and K.Knopper's presentation of Knoppix 5.3 told, that K.K. mentioned version 5.3.1 will come for download "a week after CEBit".
Response from knopnet to me worked for 5.2 have note tired with 5.3 yetQuote:

Maybe this will help:
1. Get 5.2 running in German.
2. Select the K Menu button.
3. Select Kontrollzentrum.
4. Select Regionaleinstellungen.
5. Select Land/Region & Sprache.
6. Select Sprache Hinzufugen.
7. Select US-Englisch.
8. Select US English.
9. Select Anwenden.
10. Select OK.
11. Wait.
12. Select Datei.
13. Select Beenden.
14. Select K Menu button.
15. Select Abmelden.
16. Select Aktuelle Sitzung Beenden.
17. Wait.
18 Enjoy.

I am one of very few who used not to break computer (?) law. I don't use any p2p software to download movies, songs, software and so on. I assume that most users of Free/Open Software follow the rules and understand our common interest. For instance I am not going to distribute new Knoppix until it is publically available.
But on the other hand KNX 5.3 IS available on Cebit and enclosed to ct magazine so in my oppinion there is no reason to wait to start talking about new Knoppix. WE are the Knopper's army :-) .
Hi,
FYI, the KNOPPIX_V5.3.0DVD-2008-02-12-DE.iso available via bittorrnet on
http://linuxtracker.org/index.php?pa...fe0b93ee389fbd
is incomplete since the end part of the DVD is missing and leads to corrupted files.
The bittorrent http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4066611/...08-edition.iso
can be used to check and update an incomplete iso (after renaming the file) and avoid re-downloading the whole thing again.
Hope this helps,
Gilles
Since I did not get an answer on the debian mailing list: http://lists.debian.org/debian-knopp.../msg00013.html
I will try again in here:

In order to customize your minirt and some features like: iso boot from ntfs, customized hostname,...
I found out this problem: how do you extract the content of the Knoppix 5.3.0 minirt.gz ?
Usually "gunzip initrd.gz" and "cpio -imvd -I ../initrd" does the job but not this time:
Each files of the minirt cpio archive file contains a leading "/" which makes the data of the minirt cpio archive
to be stored in the "root" instead of the current directory, overriding the system files of the running system.
I cannot find any cpio option to override the leading "/".
Please help...

First of all, thanks for pointing out that the linuxtracker torrent provides an incomplete copy of the CeBIT image. I suspected as much!Quote:

1) Hack the cpio file directories with sed or hexedit.
2) Use chroot to provide a safe root.
3) Use unionfs or aufs to provide a safe root.
4) Use pax to convert to and from tar.
5) Use pax directly.
Ah, so that's why the file sizes are different. (Even so, I didn't experience any problems running the one from LinuxTracker.)Quote:

Well, I was pretty doubtful that this target date would be made. CEBit opened 2 weeks ago now, and closed over a week ago. Looks like we have already slipped another week. See Eppo's post here, which gives what Klaus calls an "Internal release date" of this coming Saturday. I'm not sure what an Internal date is for a version that is released directly to the Internet, not to manufacturing, but I figure this date has about even odds of being met. Unless Internal means it is released to a few key testers, which could mean several more weeks of delay for testing and any additional fixes. If it does come out this weekend though I would suggest that users burn this release to rewriteable media and watch for a bug fix version a few weeks later. (We are those testers!) And, of course, stay away from the e-bay resellers unless you want your marginal high speed burn to be outdated by the time it arrives.Quote:

Only a DVD version for now (in both English[EN] and German[DE] versions). In the past a CD version has come out later, although if serious bugs are caught there may be no CD release of this version and we would have to wait for the bug fixes and the next DVD first. Of course, a CD version is a handy thing to have, as there are still a lot of systems that can boot a CD and not a DVD. But at least we are starting to see a new release. My download is at 21.9% as I write this.Quote:

Just a few first observations on 5.3.1. I've been playing with it for a little over an hour now:
I'm glad to have a new release after quite a long wait (although there was a Jan '07 release of 5.1.1, this is really the first major update in about two years). But I didn't see a lot of big changes. There is no list of changes, closest there would be is a list of packages on the DVD.
The DVD boots fine on a new HP DV6000 laptop. Unfortunately, it doesn't boot on my Compaq Presario 1700 notebook, and the problem is not apparent. It doesn't seem to be a cheat code issue, as the boot gets into the GUI just fine and even lets me open SDA1 if I want; but the boot just never finishes and I never get the menu items in the bottom toolbar (as a result I can't run much of anything and have to power off rater than do a normal shutdown). I'll need to do more experimenting on other systems and perhaps with another burn of the DVD. No good understanding of this yet, but I'm mentioning this now in case others are seeing it also.
VirtualBOX is iincluded. I'm looking forward to trying out an alternative virtual machine system to VMware, although I'm quite happy with VMware. No virtual machines were included, so users will have to start from scratch and create their own.
I was really shocked that GIMP does NOT seem to be included, at least it wasn't in the Graphics menu. Of course, any Live DVD has to choose which programs to include and which to omit and there's no pleasing everyone, but this is one of the most well known major open source applications. I'm hard pressed to understand why it isn't there.
5.0x and 5.1x were a major disappointment for me in the wireless area, interfaces that I have that worked in 4.02 stopped working, and interfaces that other Linux Live CD recognize have never been recognized at all by Knoppix. I was hoping that 5.3.1 would improve the wireless situation, but at least for me this does not seem to be the case. I'm still having problems recognizing hardware and connecting o a system that could connect in 4.02. And WPA still seems to be missing (WEP has been so badly broken in the last year that it's foolish to use it at all now, not that it was ever safe.) This is unfortunate because with all of the problems wifi faces, I would prefer to use a Live DVD if I ever surf the web from a public access point rather than expose my installed system to attacks. But Knoppix 5.3.1 sure doesn't play well with my hardware. Others with different hardware and not needing WPA (it's not used by many public access spots, after all) may fare better. I do expect the posts by newbees in these forums who expect and want wireless support with continue and increase though.
Just a very minor issue: The menu system doesn't seem very well thought out or polished. Why, for example, have a sub-menu on a Live DVD with only one item in it, as is the case in multimedia/video ? The application could just as well be moved to the next level up and the sub-menu eliminated.
Overall, I'm glad to see a new version of Knoppix has come out. I do expect and hope that there are a lot of improvements that are not immidately apparent. I'll certainly be keeping a copy of this in my case of discs that I take with me troubleshooting. But I'm not likely to hand out copies of this version like I did with the 3.x and 4.02 versions. I want to fnd something more polished and with better wifi support to introduce new users to Linux.
I am really happy to see knoppix 5.3.1. Eagerly waiting for CD version. I hope re mastering procedure remains the same.
It's there, it's just hidden in Lost & Found > Graphics. Which brings us to...Quote:

Best Regards,
Gilles
On the DVD, are there KNOPPIX and KNOPPIX2 files in the KNOPPIX directory, or is there no KNOPPIX2?
There are still 2 files, KNOPPIX and KNOPPIX2. They are now in a subdirectory of the Knoppix directory called gigantic. Strangely, the original reason given why there had to be two files was that ISO9660 format required files be less than 2 gig in size, thus the large compressed file had to be broken into multiple files. But in 5.3.1 the KNOPPIX file is 2,759,431,989 bytes. So I assume that ISO9660 compatibility is no longer an issue. Why there are still two files then is a mystery.Quote:

Actually, ISO9660 is reported to have a 4GB file size limitation.Quote:

Or maybe there is some organizational reason to keep the two compressed filesystems split in a certain way.
I suppose someone could ask Mr. Knopper if he/she wants to know the definitive answer.
The first official Knoppix DVD was under 4 gig in size, but still had the compressed file split in two, and this was the reason given, right or wrong.Quote:
