mkisofs crashes at 98%
Hi,
I'm trying to remaster Knoppix 3.4 to a DVD. I haven't added or removed any packages. All I've done is add a single directory with a 2.3GB tar.gz file in it. When I run...
Code:
mkisofs -R -U -V "KNOPPIX.net filesystem" -P "KNOPPIX www.knoppix.net" -hide-rr-moved -cache-inodes -no-bak -pad /mnt/hda1/knx/source/KNOPPIX | nice -5 /usr/bin/create_compressed_fs - 65536 > /mnt/hda1/knx/master/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX
it crashes at about 98.5% with a segmentation fault. I'm using a 20GB swap file and have over 100GB free on the drive I'm working with. I've tried it on a different machine and the exact same thing happens. When I use Knoppix 3.3 the above command works, but...
Code:
mkisofs -pad -l -r -J -v -V "KNOPPIX" -b KNOPPIX/boot.img -c KNOPPIX/boot.cat -hide-rr-moved -o /mnt/hda1/knx/knoppix.iso /mnt/hda1/knx/master
would always produce a KNOPPIX image that was only a couple hundered MB (the .iso file would show up as about 3GB, but when I mounted it and had a look around the KNOPPIX file was too small).
When using Knoppix 3.4 I can get it to work if I don't add anything to the source directory. I've been adding my files to /mnt/hda1/knx/source/KNOPPIX/images/*
I created the 'images' directory. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I do remember reading that at some time or another. I actually can't even get to that step. My problem occurs while trying to create the cloop compressed KNOPPIX file.
I've read everything I can find (forums, docs, google). Does anyone know how I could split the following command apart, so I could do it in steps and maybe get a better idea of exactly what is happening...
Code:
mkisofs -R -U -V "KNOPPIX.net filesystem" -P "KNOPPIX www.knoppix.net" -hide-rr-moved -cache-inodes -no-bak -pad /mnt/hda1/knx/source/KNOPPIX | nice -5 /usr/bin/create_compressed_fs - 65536 > /mnt/hda1/knx/master/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX
Thanks,
Ryan

That has to be the most confusing path to your uncompressed source I've ever seen!
I just do this:
Code:
mkisofs -RUV "KNOPPIX.net filesystem" -P "KNOPPIX www.knoppix.net" -cache-inodes -no-bak -pad /source | nice -5 create_compressed_fs - 65536 > /build/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX
You see the uncompressed fs is on a partition mounted @ /source and I have a directory name KNOPPIX on another partition mounted at /build. Alot simpler this way don't you think?
Anyway.....perhaps this is of some help:

Re: mkisofs crashes at 98%
Hi --
Did you resolve that issue ? I am currently running in the same problem.
However, I have to say that I remaster from within my Fedora Core 1 distribution.
I started off with KNOPPIX 3.4 (CD version) and added on apache and MySQL, udated to KDE-3.2.2 etc. Then the standard:
Code:
mkisofs -R -U -V "KNOPPIX.net filesystem" -P "KNOPPIX www.knoppix.net" -hide-rr-moved -cache-inodes -no-bak -pad Knoppix34Tree/ | create_compressed_fs - 65536 > KNOPPIX34IMAGE/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX
After about 86% of the compression I get :
Code:
Block# 172161 size 65536 -> 37240 [compression ratio 56%, overall: 28%]
*** Error -4 compressing block 172162! (compressed=0x8a1d010, len=65613, uncompressed=0x8a0d008, blocksize=65536)
It seems that the compressed block is larger than the original block.
Or do I interpret this output wrong ?
Additionally I have to say:
* yes. I try to make a DVD, since I will include molecular biology databases which are quite voluminous. Therefore the large number of blocks.
* I have 512 MB of RAM but about 4GB of SWAPFILE which seems to be enough as the process doens't seem to be killed for memory reasons
* currently, the build and source dirs are on an ext3 partition. Problem also was there on ext2
* my kernel: 2.4.22-1.2188.nptl
* I use mkisofs-2.01-0.a19.2ossdvd as this was supposed to overcome a potential max ISO size of 2GB (but whether that is / was the case I do not know )
* is there a possibility of using growisofs ?
Any ideas ?
Did you also remaster from within Fedora / non-KNOPPIX ?
Cheers.

what's your cloop version?
-
I was using the official Knoppix 3.4 CD to do my remaster. I followed the instructions on this site to the letter. In the last couple of days I have tried a remaster from my Gentoo install and seem to be having a little better luck. I also moved my image (a 3GB tar.gz file) from the source directory directly into master/KNOPPIX/subdir. Now I can actually get an ISO image that I can mount and everything looks good. It just doesn't burn onto a DVD properly (this could be an unrelated problem).
I don't know what version of cloop I have installed on my Gentoo box (if at all). How can I tell? When working from my Gentoo install I still used the create_compressed_fs from the Knoppix CD (/mnt/hda1/knx/source/KNOPPIX/usr/bin/create_compressed_fs).
I'll probably try a hard disk install of Knoppix next. I'll eventually need one anyway (if I ever get things working). I don't know if any of my additional info will help, but I figured I'd post it anyway.

OK. I have done a little more on this now. Here is what I have done...
I decided to break this step into two seperate steps to help determine where my problem was occuring, so I started with this...
Code:
mkisofs -RUV "KNOPPIX.net filesystem" -P "KNOPPIX www.knoppix.net" -hide-rr-moved -cache-inodes -no-bak -pad /mnt/hdf/knx/source/KNOPPIX > knoppix.custom.stage1
That works fine, so then I used the following command...
Code:
cat knoppix.custom.stage1 | nice -5 /mnt/hdf/knx/source/KNOPPIX/usr/bin/create_compressed_fs - 65536 > /mnt/hdf/knx/master/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX
The process dies part way though, so the next thing I tried was this...
Code:
create_compressed_fs knoppix.custom.stage1 65536 > /mnt/hdf/knx/master/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX
The create_compressed_filesystem didn't even try to run. It returned with the error
Code:
Opening input: File too large
The knoppix.custom.stage1 file I have created is about 4.4GB. I intend to burn everything onto a DVD. I don't really care too much about compression / speed. I'm trying to create a DVD that I can use for restoring WinXP systems (using partimage or even just a tar.gz file). Is there any way that I can make a disc that doesn't use a compressed filesystem (since that seems to be where I'm running into trouble)?
TIA,
Ryan

I think I've made some better progress on this. As I believe the problem doesn't really relate to the way I've titled this topic, I have created a new topic that describes it better. Check this out for more info.
