You can definitely do #1 easily, just search this forum for "saveconfig" and "persistent home".
You can also do #2, but that will probably involve some shell programming in the knoppix.sh file (unless someone has a readymade solution already).
Seems to me to be a good idea if you can save and load your config to ftp. That way, you can get the same config, whereever you are in the world, rather than carrying it around on a USB key ... Which is also a good idea. Can you load and save config from a USB key?
