Installing Gaim

I downloaded gaim-1.0.1.tar.gz and its on my desktop...Now how do i go abt installing this package...I'm completely at a loss when it comes to installing using gz files...Can someone explain the process step-by-step or direct me to the page if such a question has been posted before?

Gaim can be installed through apt. So just apt-get install gaim (after apt-get update). This is assuming you have installed to harddrive.

I suggest you use a gui package manager rather than archaic apt. I use synaptic (instead of the more usual kpackage) and have found it excellent.
