Help !!!! - VPN connection

I've just started to try this cool knoppix 3.7 but the VPN connection problem really annoys me.

I am kinda in a University network and VPN and proxy is required to get access to internet. And I have no idea how to set up a VPN connection in knoppix.


Anyone could help me???

you will need to provide quite a few more details... you description of the vpn problem has no detail.

you will need to provide more info regarding what you are trying to accomplish. for instance, it sounds like you are interested in getting from the inside university network to the outside internet network. VPN's are *usually, but not always* used for inbound traffic, so this part is a little confusing to me.

have you tried setting up the proxy on your web browser? what are the results? if there are errors, what is a description of the error.

are you sure that you have an ip address? what does the ifconfig command show you from a terminal window.?

if you do have an ip address, are you able to ping things on the inside university network by ip address (i.e. your default gateway, which you can obtain from a terminal window using the netstat -rn command). are you able to ping inside servers by their DNS name?

provide the answers to these questions and you most likely get more help from the group. other people may find it helpful to get an idea of your level of knowlege and comfort with linux and networking. if you're a total n00b don't worry, as we all started out that way, but it will give people a better idea of how they might help you.

I was off for a few days, didn't expect that someone would reply, so thank you for your message.


well, the steps to get access into internet in Windows is:

1. set ip setting to auto so that to get ip from DHCP, this can be done in Knoopix as well, I could get an ip address
2. set up a VPN connection to the campus server, and when it is connected then
3. set browser proxy to the gateway

Internet is only accessable when VPN is connected, or the browser doesn't work even if the proxy is set. So the VPN connection is necessary.

All things work very well in windows, I could get IP, ping gateway, and by its DNS name. While in Knoppix, only the 1st step could be done. (I'm quite sure about it,although I don't know any command that show I have get ip. Is there someone could tell me the related command in linux that have similar meaning as 'ipconfig' or 'ping' in windows )

So I mean, all I want to do, is to set up the necessary VPN connection. By the way, it is recommended by univ. through the use of a software called 'Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)'. But the problem is that it seems impossible to install this on knoppix.

I suppose it's a software problem rather than a network one. See, we've got all kinds of internet tool in knoppix, to set up PPPOE, ISDN, even GPRS, however, VPN connection setting up is the one that lacking, and this is the very one that I need to use internet in knoppix.

So I don't know what to do now, discard knoppix or use a system with no internet.
