no sound card 3.8 audacity

what exactly do i have to do to get my sound card to work so i can use audacity--i had no problem with knoppix 3.7
dmesg finds the card but says can only be used as root
3.8 does not allow root logins

sndconfig gives error like sound has to added as module

alsaconfig--command not avail;able ( even as root)

this really is a PIA and i did not expect this from Knoppix--what the heck is going on here--why does the basic functionality change so much from version to vertsion?

any help really is appreciate

googleing brings up all sorts of things to do about this but none work

Knoppix had some changes made from 3.7 to 3.8.
there's so much room you can put an OS on a CD. Go figure
