Adding items to KMenu

Is there a way to add items to Kmenu by dropping a ???.desktop files in /usr/share/applnk? Old versions of debian based disrtos used to do so, but in Knoppix 3.8, system it does not seem to see the items I add there.

Ok. Finally, I was able to do it. To add a directory, just create a directory in /usr/share/applnk and create a file with the name ".directory" In this file put all the data you need about this directory. See the one in /usr/share/applnk/Knoppix. To add items to it just go to kcontrol and cut and paste. This will not put anything in the user space.
