Is /UNIONFS/etc in KNOPPIX 3.9 broken

While trying to remaster KNOPPIX 3.9, I tried to see the content of /etc folder on the CD before remastring ( /UNIONFS/etc) but it seems broken. Is this a known bug? I checked the md5sum and it was ok.
