Trouble Mounting Harddrive

im tryingto access my harddrive via Knoppix that i just installed today. but when i go to get on the harddrive it says

Couldn't mount device '/dev/hda1' : Input/output error
Mount failed.

how the hell do i get access to my harddrive?

You don't give much info.

Try fdisk -l to see if the OS can even see the drive.

If it shows up there, try fsck -y /dev/hda1
