Booting Problem ? Bad image or what?

I have download the iso image (ver 5.0.1 EN ) and burn into a cd. It sucessful boot up but then it come to a halted with this message :

Accessing KNOPPIX CD at /dev/hdc.../cdrom/KNOPPIX/modules/insmod: 1 :syntax error - ")" unexpected
Can't find KNOPPIX filesystem, sorry.
Dropping you to a (very limited) shell.
Press reset button to quit.

i also found that the FAQ in the CD had change into unreadable character
The computer also had a hard time to detect the cd in both my windows based PC

I've tried the cheat code, nodma but it came out with the message :

Could not find Kernel Image

What is the cause of the problem?

My 1st PC specs:
P4 3.06Ghz with HT enable
SiS graphic card
SoundMax onboard chipset
Maxtor 40GB HDD
Samsung CD-RW drive
BenQ 16x DVD DL drive
512MB RAM

2nd PC specs :
P4 2.4Ghz without HT
Intel Onboard Graphic & Audio Chipset
LG CD drive
Samsung 60GB HDD
256MB RAM

Can anyone help me to figure our what the problem? Thanks in foward

See answer #1. My guess is that you downloaded from a mirror and did not check the md5 sum, but it could be a number of things covered in this faq.

If this is already set, your computer may not be able to read the CD (some notebooks have problems with black-coated CD's, for example).

I have a weird problem; out of three computers (two laptops and a desktop) just one laptop would boot knoppix from a 5.01 CD I just burnt. However, all the computers would boot from an XP cd, and those which would not boot from the knoppix CD have no problems reading files on the CD after they boot up in Windows.

Could this still be explained by the fact that "some notebooks have problems with black-coated CD's" or could there be some subtle problem with the image?

if the md5 checks out it could be that you burned it at a higher speed than 4x, it is a common problem with those burned at say 10x or higher.
another thing is that the media might be less than 100%

OErjan, thank you for your reply.

It certainly was burnt with the speed higher than 10x - it was 24x. I don't doubt image integrity, but I will try confirming the checksum and duplicating the disk burining it with a lower speed.

You know, you came into this thread after I had twice pointed the original poster to the faq that gives the same information that OErjan gave you, including stressing the importance of a low speed burn.

Now, seriously, the FAQ could be improved:

Quick answer: You will need one 700MB/80min blank CDR. Use a program such as Nero Burning Rom or Roxio CD Creator. You can get a free trial of Nero from their site (http://www.nero.com/en/index.html). In most cases you will want to skip the burning wizard and choose File -> Burn Image or File -> Open. Select the KNOPPIX_Vxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.iso file, then -> Burn.

Why such an important piece of information is not mentioned in the "quick answer"? What's the point in having both the quick answer and then the long answer, just slightly longer. Just a thought...
