trying to boot off knoppix 5.01 and load hangs at init runlevel 5 - have no problem installing and running slack and am also able to boot aok off pclinuxos 0.93a so am assuming there's no linux probs with my hardware

have tried both knoppix vga=0 debug -b 3 and failsafe debug -b -3 and and get as far as the root prompt where on entering init 5 I get the message:
timeout opening/writing control channel /dev/initctl

any ideas? did try a forum search but nothing turned up
