cannot login

hello!
yesterday i installed Knoppix on my hard drive as a knoppix-like system. it went all ok until today, when i made a major upgrade (some 640 packages were upgraded).
after rebooting twice (interestingly, after first reboot, i didn't have the problem), it gave me a "Welcome to Debian at Knoppix" window. it lists user Knoppix. I don't know the password for it. i tried "knoppix" but no result. root isn't allowed to log in.
please, help!

How did you install knoppix?

If you used the knoppix-installer method then you should not have this problem.
Its not a distribution recommended for beginners but this should solve your problem.
Press ctrl-atl-F2

Login as root. Then type:
useradd -m -G users,audio,video,games,dialout,cdrom -s /bin/bash username

Change username to your desired login name.
