ATI Cards and Knoppix 5.3.1

At home I have an ATI X1950 PRO AGP. Knoppix loads up fine but Compiz seems to be completely inactive. When I go into Compiz settings, various effects are indeed checked on but they seem to be completely nonfunctional. At the office I tried the same Knoppix 5.3.1 DVD with an ATI X1300 PCIe card and got the exact same results. Why is there always agony involved when it comes to ATI and Linux? I have also been trying to setup my X1300 with SLED 10 SP1 64bit. I've spent over week trying anything and everything on the web. No luck at all. I dont even remember how many times I've had to reinstall SLED. In any case if anyone has any suggestions for Knoppix 5.3.1 I would really appreciate it. Thank you very much.

Hi,
My Ati-9550 works ok and fast with Compiz-Fussion using the ati xorg-free driver. I don't use the fglrx now also free drivers.

Can you please tell me where can I obtain this driver but even more importantly to me is how do I go about installing this driver into Knoppix? Thank you.
