$ cp: overwrite '/home/knoppix/.config/lxpanel/LXDE/panels/panel' ?
A 'Yes' response to this dialog recovered the lxpanel, allowing me to post this reply.
One subtle change was noticed to the mouse pointer, which is now super-imposed on itself.
