ok so after a while i wanted to mess with it again, so i used PM 8.0 to make my 3gb hd to a linux ext3 and a swap, so it installed ok i think right now im gona type some stuff thats gona take me a min...

ok i restarted loaded it from HD and it did this all over my screen

Yeah, we know what happened.
1) The hdd is too small, you need 3.5 GB for better hd for you install.
2) LILO is having problems finding the boot sector in your root partition. To fix this, do the following:
a) Boot cd into Knoppix
b) Open console in knoppix and type the following:
b1) sudo su
b2) mount /dev/hdd /mnt/hdd -o rw
b3) chroot /mnt/hdd
b4) mcedit /etc/lilo.conf -----> make sure root=/dev/hdd1 and boot=/dev/hdd1 are in there.
b5) lilo
b6) Note: this assumes your bootloader is on an FAT/FAT32 partition only. Won't work on NTFS without a floppy or fat/fat32 partition to transfer to/from.
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1 -o rw
dd if=/dev/hdd1 of=/mnt/hda1/bootsect.lin count=1 bs=512
b7) umount /mnt/hda1
b8) exit <------- to exit from chrooted environment
b9) exit <------- to exit console
c) Reboot if no errors show up in the console when you created a new bootsect.lin file on your boot partition on /mnt/hda1.

If /hda1 is not FAT/FAT32, then change to /hdb1 if that is where winME is located. When you reboot, boot to windows xp and copy the bootsect.lin file to the c:\ drive and edit boot.ini to read:
c:\bootsect.lin="Linux" at the end of the file.

Reboot again and XP's bootloader will give you choices to boot xp, me, and linux.

is a 40gb hd over kill for linux? lol cuz im gona get a new 1

but....last time i installed it booted and everything but it had errors in the disk, like it never did the 99 99 99 thing it loaded all the drivers and stuf up to my internet card then said the drive had errors lol...o well

hmm, 40Gb is MUCH more than needed. itshould work great. hmmm, i bought a (new) 40Gb hdd with only 3.1Gb readable last week. returned it and got a new, same error. next time i got a Segate (got some € back). that worked, turned out the shipment to store had been handled roughly, so disks where damaged, he had to replace all the disks (no happy storeowner, believe me).
could that be it?

Hi folks,

have read around here a few hours now, also been to other linux sites, as well as colinux - no need for a rapid reply to this question, am in no hurry, and may find the answer as I keep reading. But maybe others have similar concerns.

Have been wanting to try linux for a long time (almost 20 years (know many "respectable" people swearing by it!)) , and a while ago finally downloaded Knoppix 3.3 (2-9-04) - have been running it from the CD, and it rocks!! Can see myself switching to using this for at least 75% of the time, but still need windoze for other times, since well you know......

Have a 2-year old machine with WinXP-pro (2001-SP1), 256RAM, a single hdd with two partitions, no programming skills, and would like to install Knoppix on the second (15 gigs) (empty now) one.

Is there a simple, straightforward way to do this, so that I get f.inst a choice when booting up, to run either WinXP or Knoppix? Or would you suggest I start out by purchasing something like Lindows?

actuallt there are ways to install knoppix. they are not ideal (knoppix was not intended to be installed) but work ok.
ther are atleast 3 different ways to get knoppix to install to hdd, knoppix-hddinstall, knoppixinstaller and poormans install. not mentioning runing the iso from hdd.

as fo choosing what to run, yes it is the deafult, there are lilo and Grub (there are others, loadlin is one for DOS)
EDIT in this topic i discuss allowing XP's bootloader to start linux (or rather starting lilo that in its turn start linux, not as slow/complicates as it sounds).

ok i got it installed, thx every1 that replyed to my post.


it was the hd, it was full of errors and was way to small, i just made a 5gb spot in my 20gb hd

and i used knoppix-installer way better than the sudo knx-hdinstall well for me anyway

linux was "born" August 1 1991.
UNIX on the other hand, of which linux is derived, was born in 1969 so...

I stand corrected. Worked with this young programmer once, back in '86, who at age 18 ran the internet section of his college, a small one in upstate NY, Clarke i think it was, - who swore by Unix, then Linux, guess it must have been in 91 or so I saw him again, at his home, and how he used Linux far more efficiently and effectively than I ever used windows.

"The Geek Inside" me is determined to explore this, get it going, even if it takes a few months. When lotto hits (or before), will get a new PC and dedicate it as a Linux machine.

From all i've read so far, though, it strikes me that much of this information is geared towards programmers and Unix users etc., towards (them) using a Window environment. What may be lacking, imo, is a more persuasive argument to MS Windows users to switch, and also some more basic instructions. For instance, the Knoppix help states that one can use Knoppix productively from the CD. huh? It took me hours, after reading the help and the FAQ (no help there I found) - to figure out how to save bookmarks, and files, on the HD.

Then again, it's free, so my expectations are......not

It still rocks!!
