🎮 Custom 2-Button Joystick for Tandy 1000 / TRS-80 Color Computer

A modern replacement-style joystick inspired by the popular Radio Shack Deluxe Joystick used with classic Tandy computers.

This custom-built 2-button joystick is designed for a variety of classic Tandy and TRS-80 Color Computer systems. It combines a classic joystick shape with Sanwa-style controls and microswitches for a more responsive and enjoyable gaming experience.

🕹️ Designed for Classic Retro PCs

Compatible with systems including:

  • Tandy 1000 family
  • TRS-80 Color Computer 1 / 2 / 3
  • Tandy 1000 EX
  • Tandy 1000 HX
  • Tandy 1000 TX
  • Other Tandy 1000 computers using the 6-pin DIN joystick connector

The controller has been personally tested and confirmed working on my Tandy 1000 EX, HX, and TX.

It should also work with other compatible Tandy 1000 systems using the same 6-pin joystick connection.

🔧 Modern Controls & Construction

I originally built this because I wanted a more reliable and enjoyable controller for playing my own collection of classic PC games.

Rather than relying on an original aging joystick, I designed and 3D-printed my own housing and installed modern controls.

Features include:

  • Sanwa-style joystick
  • Sanwa-style operation
  • 4ft cable
  • Custom 3D-printed PLA housing
  • Approximately 20% infill for added strength
  • Fully assembled and tested before shipping
  • All components are brand new

The joystick and buttons are installed into the 3D-printed housing, the wiring is soldered into place, the case is assembled, and the completed controller is tested for proper operation.

⚙️ Built-In Digital Conversion

This controller includes an analog-to-digital conversion circuit, allowing it to work with the compatible Tandy/TRS-80 systems without requiring a traditional analog joystick mechanism.

The controller is also wired to support two buttons on compatible systems.

Dragon 32 / 64 Compatibility

This controller may also be usable with the Dragon 32/64, but there is an important difference in the connector.

The Dragon uses a 5-pin DIN joystick connector, while the Tandy uses a 6-pin DIN.

If ordering for a Dragon 32/64, the center pin of the connector will need to be removed. Doing this will also disable the second button.

If you are purchasing this specifically for a Dragon computer, please contact me before ordering so I can make sure you receive the appropriate version.

🖨️ 3D-Printed Housing

Each housing is individually 3D printed in PLA rather than injection molded.

Because these are 3D-printed products, minor surface imperfections, layer lines, or small variations may be present. These are normal characteristics of the 3D-printing process and should not be considered defects.

The housing is printed with approximately 20% infill to provide a strong and durable enclosure for the controls.
