Up for sale is an iconic Macintosh SE/30 which is loaded up and maxed out and in great, working condition and great physical shape.
This is one of the most iconic and collectible vintage Macs out there. Super-fast when it came out, huge memory capacity for the time, all in a compact form-factor. It has the classic vintage Mac shape with the classic high-resolution monochrome screen. The Mac SE/30 is considered one of the most collectible classic macs out there.
The screen does not have any noticeable burn-in that I can see (see close-up of screen in pictures). The image is nice, sharp and stable as you can see in the pictures.
This Mac SE/30 has a SCSI2SD flash hard-drive replacement, with around 8GB of total storage partitioned out into four 2GB drives (actual usable capacity will be closer to 1.9GB for each of the first three drives, and about 1.3GB for the fourth drive due to formatting - this is normal). It has System 7 installed and a bunch of software including office programs, tools, diagnostics, games, utilities, etc. I have included lots of pictures of the applications running.
It also is maxed out in RAM, with 128MB, which has been tested and passed in Apple Personal Diagnostics, which is included on the hard drive. Finding compatible and working RAM sticks can be tricky nowadays, so this is all done for you and tested working.
In order to get a plain SE/30 to recognize this much RAM (normally it will only see 8MB with its original Apple ROM), you have to use a ROM patch or use a custom ROM, and this Mac has a custom ROM from BMOW (Big Mess of Wires) called theMac ROM-inator II. The BMOW ROM-inator also allows you to boot from a disk image stored in ROM in case your startup HD has a problem and it also contains a bunch or diagnostic tools on it. There are many other features with this, so you can do an online search to see these details.
The motherboard appears to have been at least partially recapped, so it should provide many more years of service. I did not do this, I just noticed that many of the surface-mount capacitors look like they have been hand re-soldered (see pics). I cannot verify if all the capacitors have been replaced.
It also comes with an installed Asante network card, which is a $100 - $150 value. This will make transferring your files back and forth so much easier. I was able to test this by connecting a network cable to an old router, and I was able to connect to the internet, but there are very few websites that will work on this old computer/browser. I did find a website called "theoldnet.com", and this did connect. Trying to go to google will cause an error screen saying your browser is not supported. This network connection is mostly going to be useful for transferring files to this computer via a network, because you can use telecommunications software to transfer files over, or use FTP, but I did not test these.
I ran Apple Personal Diagnostics and all passed (RAM, HD, floppy) except for the logic board tests. I have included pics of the results of this. I do not know why logic board tests failed. The computer works fine and I ran it for over an hour taking pics and testing it. I think it may have to do with the custom ROM, as the data in it will not match the standard Apple ROM, so the diagnostics may detect this as an error. I don't know this for sure, but as the computer works great, I presume it is not really an error.
I also tested the floppy drive with a PC 1.44MB floppy disk, and it correctly detected it as PC format. I then formatted it and it worked great, copied some files to it, and read the files back. There were no strange sounds from the floppy drive during testing, and ejection was nice and smooth.
One note - while testing this, there suddenly came a rattling sound from the back of the case where the fan is. I pressed on the case gently, and the rattling went away and never returned. If you feel the case while the computer is running, you can feel a slight vibration from the cooling fan spinning, and I believe the chassis pressed up against the case slightly, and that caused this rattling. It did not have anything to do with the floppy drive operation, and there are no other moving components in the computer that I am aware of.An Apple Standard Keyboard (M0116) and Apple mouse that are shown in the pictures are included, and they have been working well.
You will get the computer unit and all hardware inside, keyboard and keyboard connecting cable, mouse, and a generic power cable.So this is a great unit, and is working well, and fully loaded with hardware and software. Sound is nice, clean, and loud. The case if free from any major dents or scratches, but does have some slight yellowing, which is normal for a computer of this age. It even comes with the programmer's switch on the left side.
While the computer is in great working condition, I cannot provide any future guarantee on this computer which dates back to 1989 - 1991.
