What You Get ► Protectli Vault V1410 — a fanless four-port network appliance built to run a software firewall. This one is configured with a 256GB M.2 NVMe SSD alongside the 32GB eMMC that is soldered to the board. ► Four Intel i226-V 2.5GbE ports. Intel NICs are the reason people buy Protectli instead of a generic mini PC: pfSense, OPNsense and FreeBSD-derived systems have first-class Intel driver support, where cheap Realtek ports cause the throughput and stability complaints you see all over the forums. ► Runs what you point it at — pfSense, OPNsense, OpenWrt, Proxmox, Debian, Ubuntu or Windows. AES-NI handles VPN encryption in hardware, and VT-x/VT-d are present if you want to virtualize rather than run bare metal. ► The 8GB of RAM is LPDDR4 soldered to the board. There is no SODIMM slot and no upgrade path, on this unit or any V1410. Worth knowing before you buy: 8GB is ample for a firewall with IDS, and a hard ceiling if you were planning to run a dozen VMs. ► Fanless with no moving parts, drawing 27W at maximum. It runs silently and continuously in a closet or rack shelf, which is the whole point of the form factor — 5.6 x 4.8 x 2.3 inches and just over two pounds. ► HDMI 2.0, four USB 3.2 ports and an RS-232 serial console over USB-C mean you can install and troubleshoot on a monitor and keyboard rather than flying blind over the network. BIOS is AMI or coreboot depending on how the unit was ordered. ► For reference, the M.2 slot runs at PCIe 3.0 x1 rather than x4 — no constraint at all for firewall or router duty, but it does cap raw sequential speed if you were thinking of it as a general-purpose desktop.
