Up for sale is a highly sought-after vintage Chicony KB-5181 mechanical computer keyboard. This keyboard is famous among enthusiasts for its heavy vintage build profile, closely mimicking the classic IBM Model M aesthetic.
The crown jewel of this specific unit is what is underneath the keycaps: it features genuine, rare SMK Second-Generation Clicky Switches, universally celebrated by the mechanical keyboard community as "Monterey Blue" switches. These switches are famous for offering an incredibly crisp, higher-pitched tactile click that many collectors consider superior to standard IBM buckling springs and modern Cherry MX switches.
-Condition & History:
Tested Working 5 Years Ago / Sold As-Is
This keyboard belonged to a functional setup and worked perfectly when it was last used roughly 5 years ago. It has been safely stored away since then.
-Untested Today because I do not currently own the vintage 5-pin DIN to USB adapter setup required to plug it into a modern computer, I am unable to re-test it today. It is being sold as-is/untested for parts or restoration, but it has a clean operational history.
-Cosmetics: In good vintage shape with typical light scuffs, dust, and cosmetic age wear from storage. Keycaps are all present. Please inspect the photos closely to see the exact cosmetic condition.
-The keycaps are Alps-mount stems. The close-up photo confirms the light blue rectangular SMK stem.
